What Is a Colposcopy?
A colposcopy is a procedure used to closely examine the cervix, vagina, and surrounding tissue when additional evaluation is recommended after cervical screening.
During the procedure, a healthcare provider uses a specialized magnifying instrument called a colposcope to examine the tissue more closely. The colposcope stays outside the body and allows the provider to identify areas that may need further evaluation.
Why Is a Colposcopy Recommended?
A colposcopy may be recommended after an abnormal Pap smear, certain HPV results, or another cervical screening finding that requires closer evaluation.

A colposcopy may be recommended following certain abnormal Pap smear results or other cervical screening findings. An abnormal screening result does not necessarily mean that cancer is present.

What to Expect
